Welcome to my very first blog tour! Please go easy on me 🙂
I’m very excited to be reviewing the epic A Gathering of Ravens by Scott Oden:
Grimnir is the last of his kind; an orc.
To the Danes he is skraelinger, to the English orcneas, to the Irish he is fomoraig. He is Corpse-maker and Life-quencher, the Bringer of Night’.
A Gathering of Ravens is set in the Viking era when the fierce battle between the new followers of Christ and those loyal to the Old Ways erupted.
When 2 followers of the Nailed God, the new faith take shelter in Grimnir’s cave one night, he kidnaps the younger of the 2 to aid him on his quest of revenge.
He seeks to fulfil the blood retribution by killing the half Dane Bjarki who murdered his brother.
He and the kidnapped Etaine travel from Denmark to England and find that times have changed. It is a country in which neither is welcome, changing the dynamic in the relationship between the two. They find that their target is now in Ireland, bringing further rich storytelling in this medieval back drop.
Oden marries Norse, English and Celtic folk lore in a brilliantly woven tale. He is well researched and thoughtful in his descriptions.
The implications of the new faith and the abandoning of the Old Ways and the battles that ensue because of this really are fantastic. This really was a focal point for me and incredibly fascinating.
You can feel the cold wet harsh weather and smell the rotten decay in Ireland as they travel towards Grimnirs prey.
Yet Etaine finds something more than the brutal harsh front in the orc. This is not any generic protagonist, and whilst he is mean, cruel and cold and yet you do find yourself rooting for him.
The battles are brutal, bloody and fast paced. The men are battle weary and worn, yet they still fight for whichever allegiance they are tied to with endless loyalty.
I would like to thank Scott Oden for sending me a copy of this book to review and for inviting me into his world.
